Exploration of Parang-do

SEK succeeded in exploring Parang-do, an underwater rock 82 nautical miles off the southwestern coast of Cheju Island. In Korea, the Paran-do has been mysterious islet, called the Atlantis of Korea as it had notyet been explored by Korea. During the exploration of Paran-do, SEK carried out underwater surveys of the sea around the rock confirming its exact location as well as identifying the underwater rock for the first time. SEK further carried out preliminary surveys to construct a man-made islet and anchored a floating buoy on the underwater rock. This study greatly contributed to establish a concrete plan to construct a Maritime Science Station on the islet.

Expedition of the Antarctic

An expeditionary party consisting of 17 SEK officers carried out an expedition of the Antarctic from November 16 through December 16, 1985. SEK officers explored King George Island and its adjacent sea areas for the construction and operation of a future Antarctic Research Station. SEK challenged the Vinson Massif, the highest peak in the Antarctic and reached its summit, the first for Koreans. With the expedition of the Antarctic by SEK officers, Korea become the 33rd member of the Antarctic Treaty one year later, and constructed the King Sejong Station, Korea's Antarctic Research Station three year later.

"Kangsang-je" at the 24th Seoul Olympics

"Kangsang-je", a ritual ceremony on the river to celebrate the opening ofthe 24th Summer Olympics in Seoul was successfully held under SEK"s direction on the Han River on September 17, 1998. Overtwo thousand sea explorers navigating 500 vessels showed off Korea's maritime tradition to their home and abroad by displayingvarious and wonderful scenes such as the transportation of the Dragon Drum and the water parade on the Han river.

Water parade at Taejon World Exposition

At the Taejon World Exposition, a large-scale water parade to celebrate the opening of the Expositionwas performed by SEK on the Kapchon River which goes across the Exposition site. Five thousand sea explorers using 300 boats and vessels showed offKorea's rich maritime tradition by staging a large-scale water parade before numerous visitors from all over the world.

A member of ISCA

SEK is a member of ISCA (International Sea Cadet Association). ISCA is a voluntary international association ofindependent Sea Cadet organizations, with a total membership of 120,000 members, committed to a common concept, and wishing, through mutualsupport, to stimulate the sea cadet movement world-wide.
